Project Assist

Introduction

The main goal of the ASSIST project is to develop a two-arm mobile manipulator capable of assisting quadriplegic people to manipulate common objects in their day-to-day lives. Thus, the robot has to be capable of searching the objects required by the patients and to bring them back, eventually doing manipulations tasks, like opening a bottle, for example.

To accomplish this general task of retrieving and/or operating over a demanded object, the robot has to autonomously recognize, locate and grasp it.  Furthermore, the robot has to be adapted to the needs and constraints of each patient.

The overall development covers differents and complementary competences in the general field of robotics. Thus, the efforts of four research laboratories are brought together: the LIRMM of Montpellier (Manager of the project), CEA-LIST, the LAAS of Toulouse and ISIR of Paris.
